epanol Sierra de Las Minas has been a captivating place for me. I have mentioned many times before that my father was a major influence on why I fell in love with this place. And, how my grandfather through taking us outdoors constantly fed into my personal need to be in places where you can hear birds sing instead of honking cars.<\/p>

But, as I grow older and have had the opportunity to share this place with friends, I slowly came to realize the true treasure that must be stewarded carefully. Over time we have been visited by foresters informing us how to better care for the forest but at the same time being perplexed not being able to explain all that they are encountering. We have been visited by birders and they all leave in awe when they see the Resplendent Quetzal in abundance giving many opportunities to photograph its gorgeous feathers. We have been visited by Botanists who have marveled at the endangered Quercus Insignis (oak) trees showing off the very large acorns. And just recently, we have had the privilege to be visited by two renowned mycologists who were in total shock at the number of fungi they were encountering at almost every step.<\/p>

What I have come to learn is that the cloud forest has much to offer: who can put a value on the total amount of life in all of its forms that can be found with in it? But at the same time what makes it beautiful is what has put it in danger. It is too complicated to understand, by this I mean naming every tree, naming every plant, every insect, etc is practically impossible for a single person to retain. So, when people encounter these areas they go for what is simple, destroy it and plant crops.<\/p>

The other major danger the cloud forest is facing is that as the world warms up and as summers get hotter, the cloud forest will retract to higher altitudes in search of cold and cloudy weather. But there will be a time when there is no more mountain to climb and merge into and it will eventually disappear.<\/p>

Our land has been closed to the public for many years in an effort to protect the forest. Not understanding what we had, we thought that just leaving it alone would be the strategy to protect it. But, after having had the privilege of accompanying scientists through our forest it is apparent that the way to protect nature for the future is to study and record what lies hidden in the dark shadows of the cloud forest. Who knows, we might find something that is of use to humanity, or simply we will understand more what we are at the verge of loosing if we don\u2019t wake up and take care of our planet.<\/p>
